Updated Direct Access Laws in Tennessee

The state of Tennessee has recognized the benefits of physical therapy and expanded the direct access laws to make it more accessible for you! This new legislation further provides us the ability to better serve our communities and help our patients get back to the things they love!

What Does Direct Access Mean for You?

Direct access puts power into the hands of the patient when deciding if they would like to receive physical therapy. Essentially, direct access cuts out the middle man, or the referral from another healthcare professional, before receiving service. This also cuts costs of unnecessary doctor’s appointments and gives the patient additional time back because they no longer need to wait for a referral before receiving treatment. Plus, you get the added benefit of better outcomes from treatment! Research shows that people who live in states with more restrictive direct care access can experience decreased functional outcomes and frustration from waiting to receive physical therapy care.

Tennessee has now expanded its laws to allow patients to receive physical therapy care even easier, with less restrictions.

Direct Access Improvements in Tennessee

There are a few exciting updates to direct access laws in reference to physical therapy visit limits, treatments permitted and referrals. These updates allow you to come directly to physical therapy without a physician referral for a thorough evaluation and an individualized treatment plan.

Prior to the updated direct access bill, patients were restricted to only receiving fifteen visits or treatment for thirty days, whichever came first. With the new legislation, patients are able to receive up to ninety (90) days of physical therapy treatment before your physical therapist must consult with your physician.

Also, patients who suffer from a chronic condition will be able to receive physical therapy care faster and with less hassle. There is now no requirement to consult with a physician to continue care after thirty days of treating a patient. If you have been diagnosed as having a chronic, neuromuscular or developmental condition by your physician, you are welcome to continue physical therapy treatment longer than ninety days.

What does all of this mean?

This means that individuals who are looking to receive physical therapy are now more than ever encouraged to receive treatment as well as: cut costs, reduce unnecessary appointments and no waiting around to receive the treatment you need! The power of recovery is back in the hands of the patients who need it. There are now less obstacles when receiving the care you need in the state of Tennessee!
