The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) has started a public service campaign to fight the increasing prevalence of opioid abuse. This includes the promotion of more conservative approaches such as exercise and Physical Therapy. The campaign includes radio and print ads, with the print ads claiming “Painkillers are easy to get into. Hard to escape”.
The AAOS website also has a page committed to the campaign as well (https://goo.gl/U8L8UB). The page clarifies the appropriate timing and use for opioids, versus practices that have become more prevalent in recent years. The site states
“When used as recommended, prescription painkillers can alleviate severe pain, especially during the hours and days immediately following an injury or major surgery. However, opioids are not a long-term pain solution and, when misused, can lead to addiction and even death.”
These developments are obviously in line with the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) campaign #ChoosePT launched in 2016, which “promotes physical therapy as a safe and effective alternative to the use of opioids in the treatment of pain. ” (https://goo.gl/OV8zdE).
Results Physiotherapy has also been a leader in the fight against the opioid epidemic, and our focus on Manual Therapy along with other techniques such as Trigger Point Dry Needling has been demonstrated to significantly reduce pain, without the need of prescription painkillers.
